Hello!

How are you doing? I hope everything is going well.

Today I’d like to talk about a verb: contramatar(se).

This is verb is common in countries like Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Colombia (in the central area), Honduras and Nicaragua, according to the Diccionario de americanismos (Diccionary of words from the Americas).

It has two meanings:

  • contramatar means to hit a person hard, and
  • contramatarse means to fall and hit yourself violently.

A possible equivalent in English would be to crash intoor to collide with.

Now, it’s your turn! Have you ever heard this phrase before?

Could you think of a situation where you could use it? Let me know in the comments.

See you next time!
